One of my favorite thing about camping with my kids is showing them some of my favorite camping recipes and campfire treats. Recently we introduced them to campfire banana boats.
Let’s be clear here- we aren’t huge campers. Our type of camping definitely involves our RV and since we live in it full time and travel the country we don’t even really consider it camping at all! But every now and then we like to play the part and have a campfire and introduce the kids to some good old fashioned outdoor cooking.

Campfire Banana Boats
I first learned about these banana boats camping recipe when I was a teenager. Every summer I would attend Girls Camp with my church. When you were 15 and 16, you would go on an overnight hike (sometimes a couple nights) and part of that was cooking all your own food. These were an easy and delicious treat that is a great switch up from s’mores. Although s’mores will always be number one in my kid’s hearts.
The great thing about this camping treat is you actually don’t have to be on camping trips to make them. It’s perfect for backyard barbecues as you can throw them right on the grill or even on bonfires at the beach. They are great for parties or family reunions. You can also take some creative liberty. Our recipe calls for chocolate chips and marshmallows but we love to use milky ways, snickers, graham crackers or whatever else sounds appealing at the moment. We will often even use leftover Halloween candy with banana boats.
First, you will need a heating source. This is where if you are camping you will use your fire, you can use your grill, propane stove, or fire pit. You just need a big enough area where you can place the tinfoil wrapped banana boats in and let them heat up safely without overheating.
For supplies, you’ll only need a bunch of bananas, aluminum foil (heavy duty works best), cut up milk chocolate candy bars or chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. You’ll also need a butter knife. That is it. Super easy to pack in and pack out if you are camping because you will likely have most of that anyways.
You will prepare some foil squares and make a slit in the bananas lenthwise. The key is to not cut all the way through the banana. Separate the banana so there is room to stuff it full with as much goodness as you can. Once it is separated you will stuff marshmallows and chocolate until you can’t stuff it anymore. Press and seal the banana back together and try to smoosh the chocolate and marshmallow into the banana by pushing on the sides. You can also try adding peanut butter for a twist.
Wrap the banana boat camping treat up in foil and place near the heating source. You will want to rotate it after about 4 to five minutes so it can heat all the way through. You want the marshmallows to become gooey and the chocolate to become all the way melted. So a couple more minutes after rotated will be ideal.
Take out of the fire and let cool just a couple of minutes. This treat is best enjoyed warm. Grab a spoon and eat right out of the foil and banana peel. If you are doing the backyard thing, add a scoop of ice cream for an additional measure of deliciousness. Enjoy this super simple and delicious camping treat with your family and friends.
