Being pregnant is a wonderful time in any woman’s life. It’s a time of miracles and growth (both belly and mind) and is so fulfilling. Unfortunately it also is a time of discomfort and trials as well.
With my first pregnancy I probably flew on an airplane close to thirty times. This is my second time being pregnant and while I haven’t flown as many as the last time (probably around 7-10 times) I feel I am able to know what to expect and how to make an already uncomfortable situation (being pregnant and flying or just flying in general) a little more tolerable. Here are the tips I have learned over the years to a better flying experience overall while pregnant.
Avoid flying in your first trimester if at all possible. Especially if you are sick. Flying will just make it worse; you will be in for a miserable experience. Also, the first trimester is just so unpredictable. If you do fly, make sure you have enough snacks, ginger ale, and an aisle seat for quick escapes.
Always bring an empty bottle for water. You need to keep really hydrated while pregnant and the change of altitude and hustling through the airports, and heat if traveling in summer will dehydrate you quickly.
Pack lots of snacks. These days airlines don’t give you much and you need to keep up your energy while traveling and make sure your blood sugar doesn’t get too low. Almonds, crackers, and anything else you are craving are good choices.
Wear compression socks. I’ll be honest. They aren’t the cutest things in the world, but if you want to avoid varicose veins and make sure your blood circulates properly (especially on long flights or flights that exceed 32,000 feet) these can be life-savers.
Bring your U-Pillow. If you have ever read any of my other articles you know how much I adore my U-Pillow. I love it that much more when I travel while pregnant. You can sleep easier, if you have….issues you can sit on it to ease pain, and you can give yourself extra cushion wherever you may need it. Seriously the possibilities are endless. I’m always finding uses for it.
Flying while pregnant is very much achievable and can be a pleasant experience. Just take the time to plan, make sure you don’t have any too-quick connections, check your heavy bags, and relax. Flying during my second trimester is always my favorite and besides you need to have a babymoon right?
