London, England Walking Tour

Oh college Reid, stop using student loans to travel!

When I was in college I was briefly in England and wanted to explore London, but I only had one day to do it. I felt I needed to see as much of the city possible and didn’t know how to cram in all that I wanted to see. As chance would have it, a friend of a friend happened to have a day off and offered to show our group around the city. When we met up that morning in London we were surprised when he told us we would be footing it for the day. He mentioned that public transportation was a great way to get around, but it was a beautiful day and to think of the things we might miss if we spend the day riding the Tube. Not entirely excited to walk the city, I followed our guide’s lead and ended up having a very memorable day in the city. In honor of the London Olympics and the rise in tourist traffic to the city, here is an outline of the walking tour I’ll never forget and the major points of interest along the way.

A Google Map version of the tour for reference. (Click to launch map)

Other bonuses along the way:
Haymarket – Between Picadilly and Trafalgar.  Where some of London’s playhouses reside.
The Mall – Historic/government buildings and nice views.
Horse Guards Parade – An open place they use for ceremonies and events on the East side of St. James. They usually have traditional English guards at post.
Parliament Square – A park with some monuments great views of Parliament.
Westminster Bridge – Make sure to turn around and take a picture of Big Ben and Parliament.
London Aquarium- Just across Westminster Bridge from Parliament.
Jubilee Gardens – A public park near the London Eye.
The River Thames – Enjoy the view, much of the walk follows the Thames.
The Fire of 1666 – All around the St. Paul’s Cathedral there are markers describing the area affected by the fire of 1666. You’ll have to keep an eye open, some of the markers are hidden.
HMS Belfast – Just down the river from the Tower Bridge is the retired WWII vessel which is now a museum.

Thanks for a walk down memory lane for me. Because you mentioned the Olympics and Horse Guards Parade, I found it interesting to note that this is where they will have the volleyball venues.
